Even after the discovery of Aetheric Field Fragments, the Expedition didn't figure out their use for some time after that.
It was only after we came across the siege territories that we learned the fragments are keys that activate those massive Aetheric Field Stones.
We now know that you're taken somewhere upon entering an Aetheric Field Corridor, but where you end up isn't certain.
